It is an increasingly playing a pivotal role in Italian foreign policy. Its initiatives are mainly focused on sub-Saharan Africa, in countries where significant international commitments have been made (such as Afghanistan and Lebanon) and in regions where Italy’s presence has deep roots (including Latin America, the Middle East and the Mediterranean). Its priority areas of activity are: the environment and common goods, with a special emphasis on rural development, organic and conventional farming, and the search for alternative and renewable sources of energy; gender policies and, in particular, the empowerment of women, as well as traditional health and education interventions.
